HCCA Annual Compliance Institute Review

CBIZ KA Consulting Services recently exhibited at the HCCA Annual Compliance Institute, an important yearly gathering for those involved in healthcare compliance. This year’s conference was in Anaheim, California and the HCCA continued to hold a hybrid conference model, whereby attendees could go in person or attend education sessions remotely. Overall attendance was up compared to the 2022 conference, with about a 50/50 split of those attending in person vs. remotely.

At the exhibit hall, two of our services generated almost all of our conversations with those attendees who stopped by our booth. The most popular service was our coding compliance audits, where attendees were interested in discussing our approach to inpatient and physician reviews. We spoke with organizations looking for a partner for their annual external audit plan. Other providers wanted us to participate in their upcoming RFPs. We also discussed a one-time audit with a large physician practice. In addition, we spoke with companies who were looking to provide more value to their client base by offering inpatient coding reviews.

While there were other companies at the exhibit hall that also offered coding services and solutions, our emphasis on how we work with provides to educate their staff and improve coding and documentation performance particularly resonated.

Another service that generated interest at the conference was our medical necessity audits. We spoke with a number of organizations that wanted a third-party to look at their short stay admissions and their observation patients. Compliance officers that we spoke with rightly understood that the short stay/observation area is a significant risk for their organizations. In addition, short stay admissions continue to be a frequently audited area by the government and their intermediaries.

Overall, it was a solid conference for us. We received further confirmation that medical necessity reviews, while not a new area of emphasis in compliance, has once again become a more prominent issue for compliance officers. In addition, our evergreen coding audit services continue to resonate – everyone needs a good external coding audit from time to time.
