Telehealth Audits Coming Soon – Are You Prepared?

What providers need to know about the upcoming telehealth audits.

With the increased utilization of telehealth services resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, predictably, the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that they will begin telehealth audits. The planned auditing program will review Medicare Part B telehealth services and will commence in two phases throughout 2021. The audit plan is as follows:

Phase 1:

  • Evaluation and Management (E&M)
  • Opioid Use Order
  • End-Stage Renal Disease
  • Psychotherapy

Phase 2:

  • Distant and Originating Site Locations
  • Virtual Check-In Services
  • Electronic Visits
  • Remote Patient Monitoring
  • Use of Telehealth Technology
  • Annual Wellness Visits

CMS will be reviewing these services to determine if Medicare requirements have been met.

In preparation for these audits, CBIZ has been working with a number of clients to ensure that these services have been coded and billed compliantly, specifically with E&M and remote patient monitoring. Should you have any immediate questions, concerns or needs regarding these upcoming audits, CBIZ can assist.
